Dear Overstory, I am applying for the Staff Software Engineer role because the problem is concrete and the work has consequences. Better software here does not just make a dashboard tidier. It helps utilities reduce wildfire risk, prevent outages, and make critical infrastructure less fragile. The role fits the work I am best at: turning messy domains into product systems people can actually use and trust. At Worksome, I owned integration-heavy backend work for a global platform, including webhooks, async export pipelines, customer-facing APIs, retries, deduplication, and idempotent processing. A lot of that was about reducing manual effort and making operational workflows predictable under load. That maps neatly to the scaling and ingestion problems you describe. I am backend-first, but I do not treat stack boundaries as sacred furniture. I have worked across backend, frontend, infrastructure, CI, testing, and tooling when that was the useful way to move the product forward. My deepest recent stack is Laravel/PHP, TypeScript, Vue.js, MySQL, Redis, Docker, AWS, and Linux. I do not have production Python/FastAPI/GCP/Kubernetes depth, and I would rather say that plainly than decorate it. The useful bit is the judgment: learn the tools, keep the system understandable, and avoid cleverness that turns into future archaeology. Staff-level work is most interesting to me when it stays close to the code and close to the product. I like setting direction, improving engineering habits, mentoring through reviews and examples, and still being the person who can sit down with an ugly production-shaped problem until it becomes boring. Boring is good. Boring wakes fewer people up. Overstory's mission is a large part of the draw. Climate work can get vague from a distance, but vegetation risk around power lines is not vague at all. It is physical, operational, and urgent. That is where software should earn its keep.
